Seoul ’88, 1988
reinforced red concrete, 2600x3700x150 cm
Parco Olimpico, Seoul, Korea
The sculpture was designed on the occasion of Symposium de Sculpture Olympiques à Seoul. Olympiade des Arts held for the Seoul Olympics of 1988.
“I considered various possibilities, and in the end I found myself in the central square of the Olympic Park. I opted for that location, completely different from the first one, accepted the challenge of working among newly completed buildings, and imagined that there was nothing to prevent me from repeating the Besana experiment, as the form seemed to me to be rationally valid in that location too. As always, I took some photographs, carefully measured the space, and went on to create montages and drawings. I calculated the height at 26 metres on the basis of that of the two closest buildings. For the length, I went for one third of that of the square. Today, I think the result is correct, and that the relationship between the ground and the sky is very powerful, just as at Besana, between the floor and the ceiling.”
