Chiao Pan Shan International Sculpture Park, Fusing Township, Taoyuan County, Taiwan
“In nature lies the origin of man, and to nature he will eventually return. The inseparable character of man’s relation to nature is timeless and immutable. Supported by an inverted triangle, the piece stands firmly on the ground, a reminder to us of our roots, and of the obligation we bear. Camphor trees tower over it on all sides, ever green and resplendent. They provide support, and deliver a visual reinforcement of the intended message: man and nature exist in symbiosis. (Viewing Guide by Wang Shou-lai) The first thing that meets a visitor’s eyes as he strolls down the footpath leading from the park’s south entrance is “Camphor Taoyuan 2003”, a sculpture that leans against a tree. It is an inverted triangular frame, painted red and made with stainless steel and special concrete, that stands on one of its three vertexes. IT subtly echos artist Mauro Staccioli’s call for loyalty to one’s roots. Although the structure leans against a tree, it stands majestically on the ground and is no less awe-inspiring than the 100-year-old camphor tree. Viewers may seat themselves comfortably in the changing tree shadows played out within the triangular frame.”
