Volterra ‘73, 1973
Cemented-plastered wood and paint, 11x46x11 cm
Mauro Staccioli Archive Museum, Volterra
Following the interest and open discussions arose during Volterra ’72, a Sculpture Symposium coordinated by Enrico Crispolti was organised in Volterra in 1973. Some of the most interesting protagonists of the dialogue between sculpture and environment took part, such as Staccioli, Cavaliere, Somaini, Carrino, and Spagnulo. Therefore, Staccioli has to face his own territory once again, bringing to fruition a pyramid-cuneus with a triangular base terminating in an iron point. Due to its location, on the Piano di Castello, Staccioli also greatly inclines the sculpture and directs it towards the Medici fortress, which had already become one of the harshest state prisons. It is thus configured as an arrow, an indication and a weapon at the same time against a situation of power and violence.
