Scultura ’86, 1986
Wood and paint, 28,7×33,5×21,4 cm
Mauro Staccioli Archive Museum, Volterra
The exhibition “La base del mondo, oltre” (The Base of the World, Beyond), organised in 1986 by the Associazione Culturale Soncino at the Rocca Sforzesca and presented by Vincenzo Accame, was, as stated in the catalogue, a homage to Piero Manzoni, proposing, through the presence of a series of artists, a different way of dealing with the centralization of culture, offering provocations and ideas for a renewed reflection on the methods of making and appropriating art. On this occasion, Mauro Staccioli intervenes by creating a concrete parallelepiped suspended in the moat. The intervention is thus characterized by a very high tension of distortion of space: a sculpture that denies the physical heaviness of its own body questions the viewer, provoking an inevitable effect of fear and estrangement.
