For Malcesine in 1982, Staccioli developed the project Ai caduti del lago e del mare. A small square on a slight slope overlooking the lake suddenly opens up to the lake and the mountains opposite; its contained size encourages pause and reflection. For this place, the sculptor, therefore, thought of a triangular sculpture to be placed at the water’s edge so as not to obstruct the view of the panorama: the vanishing lines of the form emphasize the spatiality of the place, facilitating its reading. The plastic intervention thus relates to the spot, enters into its fruition and determines a new connotation. The sculptor then planned an inscription dedication to insert on the shoreline to emphasize the boundary between land and water.
This proposal remained unrealized, but Staccioli returned to confront himself with this place again in 1988 when, on the occasion of the “Antiromantica 88/82” exhibition, he designed and realized a grand concrete triangle held vertically by a building overlooking the lake, on which one of the three corners rests. The sculpture brings to fruition what the first project hoped for: the gaze opens up, and the sculpture and its vanishing lines invite the eye to embrace the broad spatiality of the landscape.
