Celle ‘82, 1982

Wood, cardboard, sand and paint, 32,5×32,5×72,5 cm
Mauro Staccioli Archive Museum, Volterra

In 1982, Mauro Staccioli is invited by Amnon Barzel, whom he had met at the Venice Biennale in 1978, to work with nine other artists in the park of Giuliano Gori’s Villa Celle in Santomato di Pistoia. The sculptor, according to his practice, explored the place for a long time, capturing it in a rich photographic campaign, discovering its different characteristics and its nature, and identifying an initial hypothesis. For the final work, however, he chooses the wood that borders a path and builds an imposing triangle that climbs up the gentle slope. A large part of the sculpture seems to disappear into the ground while the remaining visible part is immersed in the vegetation. The sign of man’s presence is thus transfigured into a perfect and balanced synthesis with nature.
