Commissioned by the city of Brussels in 1998, Staccioli studied and realized a sculpture for the Watermael-Boitsfort roundabout, thus responding to two needs: to emphasise with a work of art the beginning of the avenue leading to the city as a sign of welcome like the ancient city gates; to find a solution to save lives in a place where several fatal accidents had occurred. The artist studies the dimensions of his sign in proportion to the width of the street and creates a kind of square with a curved base (for the first time in the sculptor’s lexicon) that makes it unstable. The sign is thus visible from a distance and can induce people to slow down.
