Barriera, 1970
Cement-plastered wood and iron spikes, 16×39,4×16,8 cm
Mauro Staccioli Museum Archive, Volterra
Alongside the theme of Walls, in his early works of the Seventies Staccioli also developed the subject of Barriers, concrete cubes holding iron bars, or concrete slabs with spikes that bring to mind the spike strips of checkpoints. In this project, which was never realized, Staccioli arranges cubes to compose an imposing barrier that, in its role as a threatening obstacle, blends medieval echoes and recent memories, the battles of foot soldiers and knights, and, at the same time, those being fought in the present of those dramatic “anni di piombo”.
